I've seen a number of speakers in my time at conferences, annual conventions and seminars. Most do a good job, but some are special. They "make the meeting" in a sense, and provide your programs with momentum. Over time, I've had the unique opportunity to see quite a few folks, but a few stand out.
The rankings below are those I would select for a keynote for just about any association. I'll also drop in a few for special occasions.
Marshall Goldsmith - Not only are his executive coaching techniques worthwhile, but he is simply a class act to work with. How many keynote speakers arrive early, get to know the audience, attend conference functions and really sincerely want to help the executives he addresses? Here's one. His latest book is "What Got You Here, Won't Get Your There"
Tom Donohue - The US Chamber's CEO does a fantastic job for an association crowd. He provides fantastic perspective on business issues while providing an underlying theme about the value of associations. He never disappoints. Only US Chamber member associations get access to this high profile CEO. Your organization should join even if it is to see one of Tom's high energy addresses.
Bonus Duo: Every Washington DC exec knows a political program is not complete without Charlie Cook and/or Stu Rothenberg. They are very capable in their own right, but I enjoy them particularly as a team. Book them now for the busy 2008 election season.
Michael Treacy - the author of Double Digit Growth and Discipline of Market Leaders understands associations. I worked with him at the Chamber to develop "The Future of the Competitive Association" study. An expert on the topic of innovation, Michael is quite selective about the associations he addresses. However, he does a great deal of background on your organization to deliver a valuable address.
Ken Dychtwald - A well known expert on the coming "new old", Ken is entertaining and a real professional to work with at your association. If your association and its members aren't thinking about changes in demographics, you're asleep at the wheel.
Newt Gingrich - No eye rolls from Democratic friends, the former speaker is an absolute home run! His discussions regarding health care are entertaining, engaging and a stimulating brain exercise. If you choose Mr. Gingrich, hold on tight because his speech moves fast, and is chock full of information.
